Transform your view of the past

When I was in 6th grade, my mom was at least 30 minutes late to pick me up from school several times. I got so angry and upset with her about it. Until I was 19, I could not even confront her about her habit of being late and how angry I got when that happened. I realized that what I did was I pretended that her being late meant she didn’t love me and she didn’t care about me.

Ever since then, I’ve been living my whole life with the background that no one loves me and no one cares about me. And I pretended that the only way for me to get someone to pay attention to me or to love me is to make myself unhappy. I know, it sounds stupid. And it is. But I’ve found that it’s part of the human condition. Everyone holds the past against themselves in some way or another. And what ends up happening is that your future has no possibility anymore. It’s just the way it is and the more things change, the more they stay the same.

For me, my future had no possibility of being happy. Happiness for me was always a “someday” thing. Like, when I graduate from high school, then I’ll be happy. O wait, that’s not it!

When I graduate from college, then I’ll be happy. Oh no! That wasn’t it.

When I get a girlfriend, then I’ll be happy! That didn’t work.

When I get more sleep, then I’ll be happy! O shit, that isn’t it either.

When I make a million dollars, then I’ll be happy! Oops, that didn’t work either.

No no seriously, if I just get a new car, then I’ll really be happy. For real this time. Ohhh no that’t not it either!

I was so exhausted from this eternal struggle to get somewhere, to get happiness, to get something outside of myself. Now I’ve realized that there’s nowhere to get to. There’s nowhere to go. There’s nothing to get done. I am alive right now. And I know that absolutely ANYTHING is possible for myself and my life. Right now. Not someday. Not when I have a million dollars. Right now. Right here. The constraints of the past no longer hold me back.

Now I know I am one in a million in this regards. You know people in your life where the future is predetermined – there is no possibility anymore. You know people who say things like, “Oh I’ll never be rich… No, that’s just the way my brother is – he’s a jerk and that’s never going to change… Oh, the economy’s bad that’s why I’m broke… The damn Democrats are messing everything up, that’s why I’m poor and unhappy… My mom’s a bitch and my dad left when I was a kid so that’s why I am the way I am…” Well I’ve got news for you…

YOU’RE BROKE AND UNHAPPY BECAUSE YOU CHOOSE TO BE.

You see, Donald Trump is not rich because he’s smarter than anyone else, he’s not rich because he’s charming, he’s not rich because of any attribute or quality he has. He’s rich because he chooses to be rich. Any day, Donald Trump can choose not to be rich. The future has unlimited, endless possibilities. Donald Trump could be the poorest man in the world tomorrow. But why would he limit himself that way? Why do you limit yourself that way? You can choose to be rich. Right now.

Now I know you’re probably thinking “Hey, I would choose to be rich if it was that easy, but it’s just not.” Well I’m telling you, it is just that easy. The problem is, you’re stuck in your past, with all your reasons and judgments about why you are not rich now and will never be. You see, if you’re still playing the game that your mom didn’t love you and you are a failure and rich people are jerks then it’s going to be hard for you to create a different future for yourself.

I invented the possibility of being happy, loving, and making a difference in the world. And when I am being happy, loving, and someone who makes a difference in the world, I am rich. Right now. Right here. And it doesn’t matter how much money I have in my bank account or my wallet or my brokerage account because I am rich right now.

There’s an unlimited abundance of money out there waiting for me to give up my past and receive the abundance. When I am being rich, I feel rich. I think the thoughts of someone who is rich. And I am called to do the actions of the rich. I complete the tasks which are before me with effectiveness, joy, and passion. I no longer procrastinate. I don’t put it off. I don’t bitch and complain about how hard it is. I just do it. And I have fun.

And if you can’t have fun while you’re doing it then you’re just going to be stuck in that game of always chasing something outside yourself for happiness. “No, really Tom, if I could just get that promotion at work, then I’d really be happy.” I’m pretty sure you’re just kidding yourself.

I invite you to give up your past and all your reasons for not being rich and happy in your life. I know you want more information on how to get rid of the constraints of the past for yourself and create what it is you really want in your life. That is why I recommend you take the Landmark Forum like I did. I invite you to register online today at www.landmarkforum.com

Shift the money paradigm now

Shift the money paradigm now

The messages that we as young people are getting from the news, relatives, parents, friends and even teachers is that it is impossible for a good person with good morals to make really good money. A lot of people can identify with this. Consider this, with all the voices in the world telling them that money equals bad, it’s going to take more than one person as a role model to shift that kind of thinking. This kind of thinking is being pushed on our kids by mass media, by friends, and even teachers. Here’s the good news. If we want to start this re-education when you are still young it isn’t going to take years to change like it does with a lot of older people. It will only take two months. In Money33 we make sure that our students develop healthy ways to handle money and live a life on purpose.

With Money33 you will…
• have more results
• have habits that lead to success
• have an healthy way of handling money
• live a purposeful live
• experience success while being a teenager

Money33 is for everyone who is 12 – 21 years old

“I’m much more purposeful, happier and interested in many things than I was before.

Direct Selling is the Best Career

By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY

Not long ago, Craig Lapp made his living driving a truck that helped carve Southern California’s soil into new developments. But then housing sales slumped, and in November 2007 Lapp’s construction company let him go.

While he searched for another job, Lapp began working alongside his wife, Lynne, in a business based in their Temecula home, selling nutritional supplements made by the direct-sales company Isagenix. Nearly two years later and with no construction job in sight, Lapp says a one-time sideline has become the couple’s bread and butter.

“It’s paying our mortgage, our car payments … putting food on the table,” says Lapp, 55, who adds that he and his wife are earning a six-figure income. “It was our ‘Plan B’ that turned into our ‘Plan A.’ “

Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation’s unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.

“We’re recession-resistant in the sense that more people come to us during economic hard times for supplemental income or replacement of a lost job,” says Neil Offen, president of the Direct Selling Association, the trade group that represents the largest U.S. direct sales companies.

While 2008 industry figures aren’t yet available, “Anecdotally we’re hearing that recruitment is up and … unfortunately as the unemployment rate rises to 10% or higher, we’ll be picking up more people who need an income-earning opportunity.”

The recession has become a recruiting tool. An Avon (AVP) cosmetics representative declares in TV ads that “I can’t get laid off. It’s my business.” Companies such as Isagenix, a marketer of weight-management and nutritional supplements and snacks, and jewelry maker Silpada Designs are coaching their representatives to spread the word that direct selling can keep you afloat in the faltering economy.

“Right now, our direct-selling opportunity is really the No. 1 product that we have to sell,” says Geralyn Breig, president of Avon North America.

With that in mind, Avon this year launched its most ambitious recruitment campaign and saw its U.S. sales force grow to more than 680,000 through March, its largest ever, Breig says.

The same month, cosmetics company Mary Kay began airing its first TV ad for new representatives. In its first three days, visitors seeking information about becoming “beauty consultants” at MaryKay.com spiked 108%.

Silpada Designs, a Lenexa, Kan.-based company specializing in sterling silver jewelry, says its sales force in the U.S. and Canada was up 11.8% on May 1 from a year earlier. And Chandler, Ariz.-based Isagenix says its sales force was up 30% in March from a year before.

The hope is that larger sales forces will grow revenue, even in an economy that has shrunk sales for many companies.

“Representatives and recruiting are a leading indicator of future sales,” says Jerry Kelly, Silpada’s CEO, who acknowledges sales for his privately owned company were down roughly 10% in the fourth quarter of last year. “We’re optimistic that we’re going to fare fairly well this year as a company in a very difficult climate. … We’re seeing a more determined and focused representative who might be looking to supplement lost income for their family.”

There are roughly 15 million direct sellers in the U.S. — independent contractors who sell goods or services primarily through parties, demonstrations in someone’s home and one-on-one interactions. In 2007, the most recent year available, the sales industry generated $30.8 billion in U.S. sales, according to the Direct Selling Association.

Sellers are recruiting

Avon aired its first infomercial last month, and rather than promoting makeup or skin products, it targets new recruits. The company kicked off its TV commercials earlier, with a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl pregame show in February. That ad, a 60-second spot and the infomercial will air all year.

The cosmetics company is also going to job fairs this year, scouting for new salespeople at more than 140 such events, Breig says. It’s also beefed up its presence with online job search engines and since February has had a recruiting ad in the front of every one of its brochures.

“We’re executing the boldest recruitment campaign … in our history,” Breig says. “It’s part of our mission to enable women to have a financial solution.”

That resonated with Elizabeth Leyba, an assistant office manager for a plumbing company who lives with her family in Munster, Ind. Leyba saw her hours cut last year and needed a way to make up her lost income while maintaining her office job and busy household.

So in April 2008, after watching a TV commercial for Avon, she decided to give it a try. In the year since, she has discovered that she is an entrepreneur.

“I didn’t know it, and I’m thrilled that I am,” says Leyba, 39, who has sold more than $10,000 worth of Avon products and hopes to sell full time. “Even though there’s a recession, even though the economy is bad, my business has continued to grow.”

Leyba’s Avon earnings have paid for everything from gas to her 17-year-old son’s senior pictures. “I’ve been working since I was 16 so, you know, I like the fact … it’s your own business,” Leyba says. “I am in control of my future now. Not corporations.”

Compensation systems vary, but representatives primarily earn money from commissions on product sales or by purchasing the products wholesale and selling them at retail prices, says the Direct Selling Association. Commissions on sales typically are 25% to 50% of retail.

While representatives may also earn a small commission on the sales from representatives they’ve recruited, legitimate businesses do not use recruitment alone as a basis for compensation, the association says.

Denise Ruiz-Cabrera, 31, of Branchburg, N.J., was nearly five months pregnant in March 2008 when she lost her job as a corporate recruiter. She could not find a new job.

“I exhausted almost every single contact that I had,” she says of her search. Though she’d used Avon products, she’d never thought of selling them until this year. She saw one of Avon’s recruitment ads, “and I thought to myself, ‘Why don’t I do that?’ “

Knocking on doors is history. Direct sales representatives now find new customers through such methods as referrals, gatherings and parties, spontaneous meetings on the street and the Internet. Ruiz-Cabrera is one who does it all.

“I’ve sort of coined the term, ‘Welcome to 21st-century Avon,’ ” says Ruiz-Cabrera, who has a personalized website maintained by the company. She carries brochures in her purse and her baby’s stroller, promotes favorite products on her Facebook page and meets new representatives she’s recruited at the local Starbucks.

“I think people in these times, we’re hungrier than we used to be,” says Ruiz-Cabrera, who has made as much as $1,000 a month with Avon. “I had jobs lined up in the pipeline that all fell through because of the economy, and I focused all that energy on my business and in three months I’ve built something that looks to be pretty promising.”

Retirees join in the trend

It’s not only those who have lost jobs or endured pay cuts who have turned to direct selling.

“We’re hearing a lot from women who’ve recently graduated or are about to graduate and are finding it to be quite a challenge to find a career,” says Rhonda Shasteen, Mary Kay’s chief marketing officer. Then there “is the other end of the age spectrum: women who are approaching retirement age, and saw a lot of their savings wiped out, and find themselves with a very short time frame and with a need to make up a lot of money.”

Lawanna Lloyd, 66, and her husband, Rodney, 69, retired in 2000. But in the wake of the stock market fall, Lloyd says they are now worth about half of what they were just 18 months ago.

To make their retirement nest egg last longer, Lloyd’s husband returned to work last year, teaching chemistry at a private school in their town of Boerne, Texas. Then Lloyd, who was a stay-at-home mom through most of her marriage, decided she needed something, too. “That’s when I signed up with Silpada,” she says.

She is rattled that there was a need for her and her husband to return to work at all.

“It doesn’t feel good,” Lloyd acknowledges. “It makes life very uncertain, and scary. …Who wants to go back to work?”

But she made more than $500 from her first jewelry parties in April, and she enjoyed hosting them.

“I think Silpada does provide the perfect solution for earning some money and being able to set my own schedule,” she says. “We had decided that we would do something … to earn income for four or five years and see where we are then. Hopefully by then the market will have recovered and we’ll feel like we can retire again.”

Kim Joseph, 26, of Stewartsville, N.J., received a master’s degree in public health in 2006, but has struggled ever since to find a job in her field. She worked for her sister as a nanny before getting a full-time position as an account manager with a marketing solutions company.

Last June, she decided to start selling Mary Kay cosmetics on the side, partly to earn extra cash for her upcoming wedding. She now intends to forgo a public health career and eventually sell the makeup line full time.

“I’ve been able to see how being a consultant gives me room to impact the lives of women,” says Joseph, who added that selling Mary Kay also gives her freedom to spend more time with her husband without crimping their household income.

Direct selling is a fluid industry, with only 10% of representatives working “full time,” or at least 30 hours a week. Many work only long enough to meet short-term goals, such as holiday presents.

But some who work in or watch the industry believe the severity of this recession may cause more sellers to stick with it, even when the economy rebounds, at least as a way to supplement their income.

“I truly believe this has readjusted people’s thinking,” says Kathy Coover, executive vice president and co-founder of Isagenix. “With this economy, people can’t take their jobs for granted anymore. They have to have another alternative … so if something does happen, this is their safety valve.”

40% of people are NOT AFFECTED by the economy

Can you rely on stocks for financial independence?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gone down more than 50% since its high of 14198.10 on October 11, 2007. Of course, you probably already know that. That also means that the average person’s stock portfolio is down more than 50%.

Many Americans put their life savings in the stock market and lost the majority of it. Employees of AIG, Washington Mutual, and the many other companies that have gone bankrupt have seen their retirement funds mostly if not completely wiped out.

Why put yourself at risk like that? Why bet on the stock market taking care of your financial future? Sure, the S&P 500 has an average return of about 7% from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2008. But today, after the financial crisis our country is in, most Americans are not exactly feeling prosperous from their stellar returns on stock investments.

There’s a smarter way

Let me tell you about an investment that is guaranteed to give you higher returns with NO RISK. It’s called investing in yourself and your self-education.

There has never been a more important time to invest in yourself. Improve your skills, get better at what you do, find your passion, work smarter. How else are you going to stay competitive and prosper while our economy is in shambles?

This is the secret to wealth, if it is even a secret. Wealthy people study. They learn. They invest in their own education. Have you ever seen a very poor person attend a seminar on creating wealth? Have you ever attended a seminar on creating wealth? Wealthy people do. As Jim Rohn says, “If you wish to be wealthy, study wealth. If you wish to be happy, study happiness.”

The Great Depression was filled with prosperity (for some)

According to an Eyewitnesshistory.com article, “Many rich people felt no impact at all [from the Great Depression] and were oblivious to the suffering of others. Up to forty percent of the country never faced real hardship during those times.”

What about you? Can you honestly say you “feel no impact at all” from the current economic conditions? Has your income kept going up and up, your lifestyle improved every day, your stress levels gone down, and your happiness achieved record highs?

Why not you?

Why not you prospering today? Why not you taking luxurious vacations and enjoying a life of abundance and joy? Why not you?

You know there are people today who enjoy incredible lives filled with vacations most people only dream about. Why not you?

There are people today driving fancy cars, dining at fancy restaurants, wearing fancy clothes. Why not you?

There are people today who’s main money problem is having so much they don’t know what to do with it. Why not you?

There are people today who spend more time thinking about what book they’re going to read next than they do about thinking about how they’re going to pay the bills. Why not you?

There are people today who are wealthier, happier, healthier and more secure than they have ever been before. Why not you?

Invest in yourself

All you have to do to achieve all the things you want in life is search for them. As the Bible says, “But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.” [Deuteronomy 4:29]

I don’t think it means just that you will find God but that you can find ANYTHING YOU DESIRE if you just search for it “with all your heart and all your soul.”

Why God wants you to be in network marketing

That’s why I love network marketing so much. I am surrounded by a group of people who have searched with all their heart and all their soul and found what they were looking for: Joy, Financial Independence, Contribution, Serving Others, Making a Difference, Personal Growth, Wealth, Health, Happiness and so much more.

Does that sound like the kind of people you are surrounding yourself with?

I remember working at a job. I remember my coworkers who were more excited about what time they would be eating lunch than anything else. It seemed like they were just searching for a way to spend 8 hours a day as fast as they could so they could get out and collect their (small) checks. I don’t remember anyone searching for joy, wealth, or contributing to others.

I often ask people “How’s everything going with you?” and the most common response I get is “Oh you know, just the same old work like usual.” Really? You mean, you just keep doing the same old work every day? The same boring, mundane tasks every single day? Do you even feel like you are contributing to other peoples’ lives? Are you making a difference in the world? Do you feel like you are contributing to your community?

Network marketing has given me the time freedom and the vehicle to achieve my dreams. I searched and searched for a way to design the kind of lifestyle I dreamed of (you know, financial independence, making a difference in the world, health, wealth and happines) and God showed me the way.

· “The Home Based Business economic opportunity is represented by two emerging industries: Wellness, and Person to Person Direct Sales.”

· “Healthcare is not really the Health Business, but the Sickness Business, little to do with preventing illness.”

· “The Wellness Industry…Money you spend to make yourself feel healthier, even when you are not sick by any standard medical definition (People going to fitness clubs, eating right, and investigating supplements that support wellness).”

· “Baby-Boomers (prosperous people ages 40 to 60), represent only 20% of our population…but 50% of our economy.”

· “You will be on the spending side of future trends or the Income Side: It is your choice.”

Hot Times Ahead by Rod Cook

WHEN RECESSION HITS THE ECONOMY, NETWORK MARKETING BOOMS

By ROD COOK

If you’re in Network Marketing, there’s good news, and there’s bad news – and the great news is that, for you, they’re both good news.

In good economic times, people are less interested in career alternatives but they can easily afford to buy more consumer goods. In bad times, they crave new business opportunities. Today, we could soon be facing global recession – and tremendous worldwide opportunities for you.

The U.S. economy is cracking apart due to mortgage meltdowns and rising fuel costs (energy) that are causing great concern worldwide. Fears are that an American economic dive will hurt the entire world economy.

U.S. and worldwide, people are beginning to worry. Once they start worrying, they quit spending money. This “psychology of fear” fuels bigger recessions. I’m not saying there is going to be a depression, which is much worse than a recession. What I am predicting, based on surveys conducted by our company (which have proved exceedingly accurate over the past 20 years), is higher unemployment and underemployment – good people forced to work for less money than their qualifications would warrant. Translated: pushed to work for trashcan wages.

MLM A Countercyclical Business

General economic theory holds that there tends to be a recession about every eight years. The entire history of the modern United States reflects this boom-and-bust cycle. Consistently, Network Marketing has grown during the “down” periods.

The oldest Network Marketing company we can track is the marine-vegetable (seaweed) supplement company, Wachter’s, which started in 1937 near the bottom of the Great Depression. Nutrilite took off in 1945 during the economic decline immediately following World War II. Shaklee and Neolife fared well in the post-Korean War slump. Amway got a good start building with the slump in 1958. Mary Kay started with the downturn in the 1960s. This theory held true in 1992 when Alliance, Kaire, Life Plus, and a number of other companies started up and boomed (then later failed due to legal problems, partnership disputes, and mismanagement after the recession). Others went into hyper growth due to the same recession and became billion dollar companies.

When recession hits, those with any intelligence are going to scramble to find alternative sources of income. In their frantic searches, they are going to find that the best of all alternatives is Network Marketing.

Understanding the relationship between low-cost entrepreneurship and economics is important. During the past few years, the world economic boom has made people complacent. In the U.S., the jobless rate dropped to all-time lows of less than five percent. People had to be sick, lame, or lazy not to get a job. Hamburger flippers got higher-paying jobs, such as assembling computers, and their incomes rose. Rather than looking for an alternative to a job or seeking extra income, these folks sat around and watched television.

When recession hits, those with any intelligence are going to scramble to find alternative sources of income. In their frantic searches, they are going to find that the best alternative is MLM also known as Network Marketing.

We followed the increase in growth of several major Network Marketing companies operating during the recession of 1973-75. Companies that were not doing badly when the recession started, they had a fair amount of growth. However, when the recession came, they took off like rockets!

During the early 2000’s recession (officially starting in November 2001), MLM company growth rates jumped higher than they were before the recession. This was due to several reasons: (1) Fear leads people to new income sources and they WORK the opportunity, not watch TV. (2) The doubt of the recession lingers in the minds of people so there is an “aftereffect”. (3) During the recession the company grew a “freverant” distributor base, recruiting more new people that lead to exponential growth.

Another factor fueling the growth in Network Marketing is that many Baby Boomers have put their life savings into the stock market. With the market’s shaky up and down spirals, many Baby Boomers are slowing their high-flying, fast-spending ways due to meager savings except for shaky stocks. With the inevitable, cyclical decline of the stock market, they will see their retirement plan funds lose 25 to 50 percent in value. Will panic will follow? We hope not! But, Baby Boomers with good sense will be looking for secondary ways to build a secondary residual retirement income. A common phrase today is, “multiple streams of income.”

Grab your hat and prepare for the next boom in Network Marketing. If you are a newcomer, study the industry closely (and quickly). If you are an old-timer, get out your contact lists for the last two to ten years. In a recession, they will be solid gold! All you have to do is get out there and help people out of their economic duress.

Now is the best time to grow your Network Marketing individual business. Whether you are a veteran or a beginning network marketer, the future is bright. Soon consumers will be looking for the best quality at the best prices. Where do they find it? In the quality products offered by your Network Marketing company .

Recession causes people to open their minds to gaining alternative sources of income. If they are still employed, they are worrying about the possibility of losing their jobs or having them downgraded. If they are unemployed, they are seeking ways to build their income without spending large amounts of money to start another business.

Work Part-time on Your Fortune

Jim Rohn, one of the best public speakers and business trainer in the world, says anyone can work part-time on your fortune while you work full-time on your job. How exactly can you do this? By building a network marketing or multi-level marketing business.

You see, all it takes to build a network marketing business is talking to people and sharing your products or services. And how long does it take to do that? As long as you want. And how many hours do you have to work every week? As much or as little as you want. With a network marketing business, YOU are in control of the time, effort and results.

This message is about some of the benefits of working part-time while creating a full-time income that keeps coming whether or not you continue to work.

Time Freedom

How would your live change if you were in complete control of the number of hours you worked and WHEN you work?

I’ve met literally thousands of people who’s lives have changed dramatically for the better because they took control of their working time by building a solid network marketing business. Moms, dads, college students, senior citizens, doctors, lawyers, interior designers, nurses – literally anyone who wants to can succeed in network marketing. There is no glass ceiling, no “clubs” to join, and no one holding you back or keeping you down.

So let me ask you again: How would your live change if you were in complete control of the number of hours you worked and WHEN you work?

Would you spend more time with your family? Would you work while your kids were at school and stop working when they came home so you could be with them more? Would you travel? Would you volunteer more in the community? Maybe you would like to start dating or spend more quality time with your spouse? Anything you want to do is possible when you have complete time freedom over your business. And that’s what network marketing delivers time and time again (assuming you work with a quality company that has no quotas or mandatory metrics to fulfill every month).

You Can Do Anything You Want With Your Life!

I know a family who, before they started in network marketing, owned a family business. And their lives were devoured by it. They worked 60, 80, even 100 hours a week sometimes just to get by and keep the business afloat. Just a few years later, they were able to sell their old business because they had build a fortune with their netowrk marketing business. This family continued to build their business and have been with the same network marketing company for 20 years.

A few years ago, the family decided they wanted to go sailing. Around the world. For an entire year. They bought the boat, made the plans, and they went sailing for an entire year. They vacationed with their friends, visited friends, saw islands and met people that would never have been possible if they had a job and had to stick to 2 weeks of vacation a year. Their children were able to have the experience of a lifetime traveling all over the world and visiting new places, new cultures and learning new ideas.

When the family came back from their vacation, their network marketing business was BIGGER than when they left. Their business grew while they were on vacation for an entire 12 months! How would you like to have a business like that?

Design Your Life for You

Do yourself a favor. Right now decide to design your own life. Decide you will do all the things you always dreamed of. Decide that you will take the steps you need to take to get yourself there. Write down all the things you want to do, all the accomplishments you want to achieve during your lifetime.

Once you have the list, ask yourself “Is what I’m currently doing going to allow me to achieve all of this?” If the answer is no or if you have a job where you have no time freedom and no chance of attaining financial independence, I recommend you start looking into good network marketing companies and choose the one that fits best for you to start working part-time on your fortune and designing the life of your dreams.

I am wishing you the greatest success and abundance on your journey.

Elevator Speech

An elevator speech will help you build new relationships and network successfully. Don’t leave it up to chance when you are meeting someone new at a networking event or the grocery store and then spurt out something completely uninteresting like “I’m a realtor.” Nothing will end a conversation faster than this sorry excuse for an introduction to your profession.

But sadly, that is what almost everyone does. I know you know what I am talking about. You have undoubtedly met someone and when you asked them what they did, the conversation just… stopped. Maybe they said something like “Oh I’m an IT consultant.” And you probably thought to yourself “I’d like to get out of here as quickly as possible.”

So to keep people from avoiding you like the plague, here are some tips to crafting an excellent elevator speech. These tips were taken from a video with Debbie Allen from iLearning Global.

How do you craft a great elevator speech?

It should be as short as possible (30 seconds max) but 7-9 seconds would be best.

There are 6 steps to crafting your elevator speech

1) Write down every service and product your company provides

This will help you picture and clarify everything you offer your customers. Once you have this list, you are ready to pick out the most important products and services you have. Make sure you also understand which products and services deliver the most of your sales and profits.

2) Brainstorm why people choose to do business with you (what are the benefits of using your products and services).

This is where you think of every possibly reason why someone does business with you. If you sell a wellness product, things like feeling better, more energy, peace of mind – all of those possible reasons why people decide to purchase and continue to use your goods and services.

3) Write out what you do in a way that encourages more conversation.

For example, if you sell houses, instead of saying, “I’m a realtor,” say something like “I specialize in people getting the most for their money when buying properties.”

4) Break it down.

Tell us what you do and how your customers benefit from working with you.

If you were a financial planner, you could say “Hi, my name is Carol and I help people manage their money so that their kids can go to college and they can still retire happily.”

Or you could say, “I help people build wealth by managing their money so that it works better for them.” Now this isn’t an incredible elevator speech, but it is far better than “I’m a financial planner.”

5) You must write out your elevator speech.

Don’t leave it up to chance. Write it out and make sure you are communicating what you intend to. You should memorize your elevator speech and be able to deliver it spontaneously.

6) Practice, practice and practice.

After you share your elevator speech with someone, ask more questions about them and their interests.

Follow-up is critical. Whatever you promise to do or send to a new or old acquaintance, DO IT. Always keep your word. Nothing will stop a relationship from growing faster than not fulfilling on your promises.

Other ways to use your elevator speech

Add your elevator speech to your e-mail signatures, business cards, brochures and marketing materials. This will help brand yourself and let people know what you do in a way that lets them understand how customers benefit from your services and products.
